10.5 Occupational Safety and Health Org

Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) recently released update guidelines that can be applied to small or medium sized work settings. My work place is the type where OSHA guidelines could be applicable. The goal of the guidelines is to reduce work related injuries and or death, reduce workers' compensation issues, and overall improve the workplace environment for employee and employers. The core elements are management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, education and training, program evaluation and improvement, and lastly, communication and coordination for host employers, contractors, and staffing agencies. For example, for hazard prevention and control, the benefit for workers is that workers identify what they would consider a type of hazard. Worker's input is highly regarded and seen as essential. This is important, although at my work, we have occupational therapist check our work space to make sure the chair fits correctly, desk is appropriate height, mouse and keyboard are properly adjusted. However, if unforeseen issues were presented by employees under OSHA guidelines, employers would have to seriously take that into consideration, eliminate serious hazards, and implement solutions.

  1. Hi Mayra,

I'm glad that OSHA released updated guidelines for employees to have a safer work environment. I think all of the core elements are important. I also like that workers can have an input. I think it is really important to hear the workers' comments and suggestions to improve their work environment. How great that there is an occupational therapist that check your work space. I wish all workplaces have this to make sure that employees have a safe work environment.

  2. Hi Mayra,
i think this guideline can be applied to a lot of work places that required workers to be sitting at a desk for a long period of time. People might not notice but sitting at a desk in the wrong way for a long time days after days can have physical impacts on the body and significantly affect body posture. OSHA should definitely encourage and support for work places to follow this guideline.
